5 Landscaping Do's and Don'ts

As summer winds down, and you start dreaming of what you want your backyard to look like in the upcoming winter and next spring, we figured it's a good time to share some of the best things we have learned landscaping beautiful Colorado homes.

While we appreciate a good DIY, we definitely don't enjoy seeing landscaping projects which were improperly done. Below are five do's and don'ts when it comes to landscaping your home.

DO: GRADE YOUR YARD

We see it time and time again, and we don't want to see it at your home. Whenever you're putting in a patio, landscape features, or just moving dirt on your property, always be sure the ground around your home is sloped away from the house.

We always want to ensure water is flowing away from your home's foundation, not towards it. That means being sure gutters have extensions so water can flow far away, and that any plantings or patios have a 2% minimum grade away from your home.

DON'T: IGNORE PLANTING CONDITIONS

Colorado's dry, arid climate makes it difficult for some plants to thrive. Taking into account shade, water conditions, and soil composition is important to avoid unnecessary frustration when another plant dies due to being planted in improper conditions.

DON'T: SKIMP ON LIGHTING

A well-lit lawn will ensure you can enjoy your home's outdoor spaces all year long, and extend the life of your yard! Exterior lighting will increase security and allow you to spend time out of doors safely, even after nightfall.

DO: IRRIGATE

Always plan for watering your plants! Colorado's climate is dry, and plants need water, even if they are native. Installing a drip system and sprinkler system can help your plants thrive, and reduce your water bill by eliminating water wasted. Having these tools in place will ensure you're not frustrated for having to remove and replant the same flower over and over.

Be sure sprinkler lines are properly maintained annually to avoid costly leaks.
